Dapto Djawula Songbird Dreaming by Daren Dunn
This artwork celebrate Dapto and the beautiful birdlife traditionally found in this area. Dapto is a Tharawal name that is often translated as “water plenty” or "place of many waters”. It is naturally rich with waterways and wetlands and was once teeming with wildlife.
Daren painted a Lyre Bird in this image. They are a special totem here in Tharawal country. Unfortunately Lyre Birds are not easily found in Dapto today. This is a sad reminder of the impact that we as humans have on our natural environments and birdlife. May this artwork remind us to listen for the songs of the song birds, to care for country and our wildlife, and to create safe spaces for our Lyre Birds to return.
