What we do

We’re responsible for building, maintaining and operating an electricity network that connects 2.8 million people to traditional and renewable energy sources, in homes and businesses across Central West NSW, the Blue Mountains, Greater Western Sydney, the Southern Highlands, the Illawarra and the South Coast of NSW.

This area includes Sydney’s second international airport, its surrounding Aerotropolis and the NSW Government’s priority land release areas in northwest and southwest Sydney. By 2030, these rapidly growing areas will become home to communities, similar in size to Canberra.

Our role in the energy sector

We’re at the forefront of integrating traditional and renewable energy sources.

We receive electricity from wind, solar, gas and coal, then send it to our 22 sub-transmission and 155 zone substations. These zone substations, which usually service entire suburbs, transform electricity to mid voltage levels (11,000 volts). Our distribution substations further transform the electricity to 415 or 240 volts. Our network of powerlines then carry this low voltage electricity to consumers for their home, office and factory use.

We use electricity generated from renewable energy sources including wind and solar, to be stored by batteries. We also assist our customers to increasingly generate, store and send electricity back into the grid.
